Our society tends to focus on the bad things or the things wrong in the world … including things going on with our youth. What we should be doing as adults and role models for our children is giving more positive feedback than negative. Research shows that we should give children 4 or more positives to each negative given. That’s what we strive for at Eagle View Elementary School with our PBIS (Positive Behaviors and Interventions System) program.
When sharing why it is important to acknowledge desired behaviors, I am sometimes asked “Why should I tell him he’s doing the right thing, when that is what he is supposed to be doing?”
My answer is this:
People like to hear that they are doing the right thing. When you acknowledge a child’s good behaviors, he/she gets a self-esteem boost. He/she gets a good feeling and will likely want to do more positive behaviors to get that feeling again.
How does Eagle View Elementary support this idea?
1. This year we have implemented a Positive Postcards program. Staff members are asked to make a point of noticing the good things kids are doing every day here at school. They then fill out a postcard and it is mailed home so the good behavior is known by families too.
2. Patriot pride tickets are part of a building-wide reward system providing positive feedback when students are doing the right thing. We have school-wide rewards tied to amount of tickets earned.
3. Regular assemblies reinforce positive character traits and reward students through ticket drawings. Some prizes include: police car rides, turkey bowling, sledding parties, etc.
4. A Pride Keeper is nominated each month from every class for being respectful, responsible, and safe. Pride keepers get a certificate, Patriot Pride water bottle, and a special reward time.
