As you recall, last school year in the months of March and April the Pequot Lakes School District ran a two-month trial in which we offered every currently enrolled student a free breakfast. The two-month trial was extremely successful and we learned that offering a free breakfast to every student is a program the food service department can sustain.
Effective December 1, 2014, Pequot Lakes School District will offer ALL CHILDREN enrolled in the Pequot Lakes Schools a free breakfast every day that school is in session. Studies conclude that students who eat breakfast show a general increase in math and reading scores as well as improvements in their speed and memory in cognitive tests, and generally perform better on standardized tests than those who skip breakfast. Studies also show that there is a decline in discipline and behavior problems with children who eat breakfast.
Why are we doing this you ask? Simply put, our goal is to get kids the breakfast they need and help improve the total learning environment.
Effective Monday, December 1, 2014, the students will go to the cafeterias as normal and will enter their 4-digit pin in the middle/high school, or have their name checked off in the elementary school, and receive their breakfast in the same way as always. The only difference is their food service account will not be charged for the meal. The meal will show up on their account but with a zero charge. Breakfast includes the entrée of the day or one of the alternatives offered, a serving of fruit, a carton of milk and serving of juice. At the middle level and high school, students may still purchase an “extra” serving of an item for $0.75.
Breakfast will be served, as follows:
-- Eagle View Elementary: 7:50 – 8:20. Hot breakfast or cereal offered until 8:15. “Grab and Go to your Classroom” breakfast offered from 8:15 – 8:20.
Kids, come and get breakfast and start your day off right!
